POLICE OFFICERS ARREST ONE DUI SUSPECT AT A SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT LAST NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO

A sobriety checkpoint on Montgomery St. in San Francisco last night yielded one DUI arrest from 480 vehicles police checked, said Sgt. Mark Gamble of the San Francisco Police Dept.

Officers arrested three drivers for not having proper licenses and towed five cars. The checkpoint was staffed by officers from SFPD, the United States Park Police and the San Francisco Community College police. It began at 8:30 p.m. and ended past midnight.

The event was the first in the 17-day winter holiday crackdown called Avoid the 8, which started Friday night and will end Jan. 3.

Other checkpoints are set for Dec. 27 and Jan. 3.

Avoid the 8, the law enforcement crackdown in the City, is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
