SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT SET FOR SATURDAY, JAN. 2
IN SAN FRANCISCO-DUI ARRESTS HOLD NEARLY STEADY
Police in San Francisco are gearing up for New Year’s Eve, known as “amateur night” to many in law enforcement.
“We expect even light drinkers to drink a fair amount on Thursday night through Friday morning, never mind heavy drinkers, who may set new records for impairment,” said Sgt. Neil Swendsen of the SFPD’s Traffic Company. “And we are ready for them.”
Drivers can expect to see many black-and-white California Highway Patrol cruisers as the two squads that serve San Francisco assign nearly all their available officers to road duty, reported CHP Lt. Dane Lobb.
A final sobriety checkpoint is set for Saturday, Jan. 2. It begins at 8:30 a.m. at a location to be disclosed two hours before the event.
As of midnight last night, officers have arrested 62 DUI suspects, down from 66 last year at this time in the 17-day crackdown that began Dec. 18.
Avoid the 8, the City’s multi-jurisdictional crackdown on DUI suspects, receives funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
