Avoid the 8 Releases Final DUI Arrest Numbers For 17-Day Crackdown in San Francisco

 No DUI deaths reported

Final DUI arrest figures are in for Avoid the 8’s 17-day crackdown in San Francisco.

Police and California Highway Patrol officers brought in 95 DUI suspects, down by 21 percent from last year’s total of 121. The crackdown was five days shorter than last year’s 21-day effort, which accounts for the drop in arrests, said Lt. Jim Calonico of the San Francisco Police Dept., campaign coordinator.

No DUI fatalities were reported to Avoid the 8 in either year.

Increased DUI enforcement during the period included three sobriety checkpoints, in-city DUI patrols, CHP freeway saturation and emphasis on DUI enforcement with officers on regular beats, Calonico said.

The campaign is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Officers will hit the roads again on Super Bowl Sunday, Jan.7 and again on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.
