SFPD, OTHER AGENCIES PLAN SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT
FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 10, IN THE CITY
San Francisco police plan a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint for Saturday, April 10, according to SFPD Traffic Sgt. Neil Swendsen. Officers from the United States Park Police and the San Francisco Community College District will assist.
“We’ll stop drivers in a pre-arranged sequence and check to see if they show signs of impairment,” he explained. “If they do, we’ll conduct further DUI investigations at the scene.”
“Police talk about drunk driving frequently, but here’s another fact many people don’t know. According to a study at the University of Utah, using a cell phone while driving, whether it’s hand-held or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration of .08, the legal limit for arrest,” he commented.
Swendsen advises people to place their cell phones in an inaccessible part of the car, such as behind the driver’s seat, so they’ll still know when it rings, and can park to return the call safely.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
