SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT SET FOR SATURDAY, MAY 1, IN SAN FRANCISCO; POLICE OFFER ADVICE ON DEALING WITH DRUNK ROAD RAGERS

A San Francisco sobriety checkpoint aimed at impaired drIvers is set for Saturday, May 1. It starts at 8:30 p.m. and ends after midnight.

Officers from the U.S. Park Police, San Francisco Police Dept., the San Francisco squad of the California Highway Patrol and the City College police will staff the enforcement event.

“Road ragers are often drunk or high on drugs,” said Sgt. Neil Swendsen of SFPD’s Traffic Company, who is in charge of the checkpoint. “Here’s what to do if you’re on the road with a driver who’s tailgating you, screaming at you, passing on the shoulder or even trying to run you off the road.

“Get out of their way immediately and report them by dialing 911 on your cell phone. A 911 call is an exception to the hands-free driving rules. Tell the dispatcher the location, direction of travel and a description of the car. If you can see the license plate, that would be even better.”

The checkpoint is part of Avoid the 8, the San Francisco multi-jurisdictional crackdown on DUI suspects. The California Office of Traffic Safety funds it through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
