SFPD MOTORCYCLE SQUAD GOES AFTER IMPAIRED DRIVERS ON CINCO DE MAYO

A six-officer San Francisco police motorcycle squad will go out after impaired drivers on Cinco de Mayo, Wednesday, May 5, starting at 7 p.m. ending at 3 a.m. Thursday.

“This holiday is like St. Patrick’s Day,” commented SFPD Traffic Sgt. Neil Swendsen.

“A lot of people celebrate it with alcohol, and some of them get behind the wheel. Remember, the designated driver isn’t the one who’s had the least to drink, it’s the completely sober person.”

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds the saturation patrols through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The enforcement event is part of Avoid the 8, the city’s multi-jurisdictional crackdown on impaired drivers.

The Memorial Day weekend, May 28 through 30, will see a Friday DUI saturation patrol and a Saturday sobriety checkpoint.
