POLICE CHECKPOINT TO CHECK FOR SOBRIETY, DRIVER’S LICENSES ON SATURDAY, JUNE 5, IN SAN FRANCISCO

Police will check on a driver’s sobriety and the status of his or her driver’s license at a checkpoint set for Saturday, June 5, in San Francisco. It starts at 8:30 p.m. at a location to be announced two hours before the event.

“People sometimes ask us what we are looking for when we smell the odor of alcohol in a car and ask the driver to step out for further investigation at a checkpoint,” said Sgt. Neil Swendsen of the San Francisco Police Dept.’s Traffic Company.

“We check to see that the driver can turn off the car and get out easily, hand us the license and registration without fumbling, stand solidly without swaying or leaning on the car for support, speak clearly, respond to questions quickly and provide correct information.

SFPD officer checkpoint time is paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
