JULY 10 SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT PLANNED BY SAN FRANCISCO POLICE

San Francisco police have set the city’s second summer sobriety checkpoint for Saturday, July 10. It begins at 8 p.m. in a location to be released to the media at 6 p.m. It will end around 3 a.m.

Officers will stop cars in a pre-set order once they are funneled into the checkpoint by signs and officer direction, waving the others through.

They will talk to each driver, and, if they notice the odor of alcohol, slurred speech or glassy, watery eyes, will instruct the driver to pull over for further investigation, according to Sgt. Neil Swendsen of the SFPD’s Traffic Company.

Drivers without proper licenses will be allowed 20 minutes to have a sober driver come pick up their cars, Swendsen said.

Other summer checkpoints are set for Saturdays including Aug. 7, and four consecutive Saturdays from Aug. 21 through Sept. 4.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds the effort through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
